"Now Woody, he's been my pal for as long as I can remember. He's brave, like a cowboy should be, and kind and smart. But the thing that makes Woody special is he'll never give up on you...ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what."
Andy, as he finally decides to hand Woody over to Bonnie

Sheriff Woody Pride[1] (better known as Woody) is one of the main characters of the Toy Story franchise. He is the main character of the films, and a supporting character in the Toy Story Treats, the Toy Story Toons shorts, and the two TV specials: Toy Story of Terror! and Toy Story That Time Forgot.

He is a vintage pull-string cowboy doll based on a character of the same name from a 1950s children's television series called Woody's Roundup. He was once the favorite toy of a boy named Andy Davis, until Andy grew up and gave him to a little girl named Bonnie Anderson. He is the leader of Andy's toys and later Bonnie's toys. In each film, Woody leaves Andy's room (where he and the other toys live) and ventures out into the world on an unexpected adventure.

Woody currently makes daily appearances in the Toy Story Midway Mania! attraction at both Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim, California and Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida.

Original concept

Woody-e1293585113676

Woody forcing Slinky to literally grovel and lick his boots, in his depiction in the Black Friday reel.

In the original story pitch of Toy Story, Woody had a markedly more unpleasant personality; having the character of one who let his role as "leader" go to his head and had little compassion towards his peers. One notable example of this from the original script is that Woody actually throws Buzz out the window on purpose and doesn't care one bit over what happened or what the other toys thought of the incident, even saying in a casual tone that it was a "toy-eat-toy world" when accused of doing so. He also proceeded to rudely insult the toys, especially Slinky, during this time, which resulted in all of them turning on him. This poor choice in characterization had been forced upon Pixar by then-Disney Chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg due to the latter wanting more of an adult, cynical, edginess to the story, resulting in Woody becoming envious, smart-alecky, hostile and mean-spirited toward Buzz and the other toys. This nearly led to Toy Story being canceled after a Black Friday Viewing. However, Pixar was given another chance, and over the next two weeks, they reworked the movie plot, making Woody a more likable character. According to John Lasseter, they wanted the audience to be like, "No, Woody. Don’t make those choices," instead of just, "Wow, what a jerk." In addition, the change was also brought about because Apple and Pixar co-founder Steve Jobs and the rest of the production team did not like how Woody ended up and decided to change his personality by making him the wise leader of the toys, and his envy over Buzz was more sympathetic.

Woody and his appearance in the first movie

"YOU! ARE! A! TOY! You aren't the real Buzz Lightyear, you're a- You're an action figure! You are a child's play thing!"
—Woody, getting increasingly frustrated, trying to snap Buzz out of his Space Ranger delusions
"And you are a sad, strange little man. And you have my pity."
—Buzz Lightyear, not believing Woody and thinking he isn't trying to help him

In the first Toy Story film, Woody is Andy's' favorite toy and leader of his toys. His best pal is Slinky Dog, whom he often played checkers with, and he had a relationship with Bo Peep. According to Mr. Potato Head, Woody has been the favorite since Andy went to kindergarten and had the place of high honor on Andy's bed as well as his owner's name on his right boot.

After a play session with Andy, Woody, while still prone, overheard Andy and his mother's conversation that the birthday party had been moved to the current day. After expressing surprise after fully animating himself at the date change, he told the other toys that the coast was clear, causing them to animate as well. Slinky attempted to play checkers with him, though Woody refused, telling them he can't play because he's got bad news, although because Slinky yelled it out and Woody barely silenced him to avoid drawing too much attention, Woody decided to call an immediate staff meeting (with Woody also insisting that Slinky act happy when making the announcement). He then attempted to find the clipboard (with Rex being implied to have moved it at a discreet location in an attempt to lure Woody over to test his roar, with Woody being more annoyed than truly scared at the result). Bo Peep then offered to have someone else watch over the sheep a few blocks away.

He holds a meeting informing them of an upcoming move to a new house, and the fact that, due to the move, Andy's birthday party is being held that day. At the request of the other toys, Woody coordinates a reconnaissance mission to discover what Andy's new toys are, as everyone fears being replaced.

During the reconnaissance, they learned that Andy didn't get any gifts warranting replacing the other toys, although a last minute gift had them turning it back on. Woody then expressed irritation that the toys, in their effort of trying to fix the baby monitor (due to Rex unintentionally wrecking it trying to demand for Sarge to divulge the identity of the gift), were putting the batteries in wrong, eventually resulting in him having to personally put them back in. He then fixed it just in time to learn from Sarge that the birthday attendees and Andy are headed to his room quickly, causing Woody to tell the toys to return to their places before he gets in. After making sure all the toys are back in their proper spots, he then falls limp on the bed before being knocked out of the way to make room for Buzz. He then emerges from under the bed, and explains to the toys that he was knocked off there due to them having too much cake and ice cream, which he insists was a mistake on the kids part, although Mr. Potato Head implies that Woody might have been replaced by the new toy. Woody assures everyone that no one, let alone himself, was going to be replaced, and insists they give the new toy a "great big, Andy's Room welcome".

Woody then discovers that Andy received Buzz Lightyear, a Space Ranger action figure complete with impressive electronic gadgets. Woody initially attempts to be cordial to Buzz and welcome him while insisting he's on Woody's spot, although he gradually gets irritated at Buzz's insistence that he's a space ranger instead of a toy. Buzz is instantly extremely popular with the other toys making Woody feel unwanted and jealous. To make matters worse, Buzz is under the delusion that he is a real Space Ranger and needs to travel back to his own planet.

As the days go by, Buzz seems to be getting most of the attention and Woody feels his world crumbling all around him especially when the posters on the walls, the pictures and even the bed sheets all change to Buzz and he ends up in the toy box instead of in the bed. Buzz even gets his owner's name on the bottom of his right boot with permanent ink, which infuriates Woody even more.

When Woody hears Andy is going to Pizza Planet for dinner one evening, he hatches a plan to knock Buzz behind Andy's desk using RC, but it backfires when Buzz gets knocked out of the window by a rotating lamp instead. He is then accused by Mr. Potato Head, Hamm and some of the other toys of attempting to murder Buzz out of jealousy and is almost attacked before Woody is taken with Andy to Pizza Planet, but only because Andy can't find Buzz. While Andy's mother refuels the car at a gas station, Woody ponders how he can return to Andy's room alone without any hostility from the other toys. Suddenly, he is confronted by Buzz (who stowed away on the car) and the two end up in a fight, leading to them fall outside the car, which drives off and leaves the two stranded.

A bitter argument between them ensues, ending with Woody angrily telling Buzz once and for all that he is a toy, and not a real Space Ranger. But since Buzz still doesn't believe him, even furiously calling him a "sad, strange little man", they go their separate ways. Then Woody spots a truck bound for Pizza Planet and plans to rendezvous with Andy there. Realizing that he will face the wrath of the other toys if he returns alone, Woody convinces Buzz that the truck is a spaceship and will take them to another one that can lead him home. At Pizza Planet, Buzz climbs into a rocket-shaped claw game machine, forcing Woody to clamber into the machine to try and rescue him. Instead, Woody and Buzz are then captured by Andy's next-door neighbor, the toy-destroying Sid Phillips.

As Woody desperately attempts to escape from Sid's house before Andy's family's moving day, Buzz finally realizes that he is a toy after viewing a commercial and becomes a depressed burden to Woody, who comes up with an escape plan to make it back to Andy's with a string of Christmas lights, and get the attention of Andy's toys to help them escape. However, Mr. Potato Head is still suspicious of Woody murdering Buzz, and Woody tries to tell him that Buzz is in fact, alive, and with him. Much to Woody's dismay, Mr. Potato Head angrily labels Woody as a "liar." In order to convince Mr. Potato Head that Buzz is with him, Woody commands Buzz to come with him, only to have Buzz throw his severed arm at him. Woody tries to convince the toys that Buzz is sound, but the toys start to become suspicious of what he's doing, and Woody accidentally blows his cover. This causes Mr. Potato Head to angrily call Woody a "murdering dog," and he and Buzz are left stranded in Sid's house by the toys. In the film's turning point, after Sid straps Buzz to a firework rocket, planning to blow him up the next morning, Woody admits that Buzz is a "cool toy", telling him all the joys of being Andy's Toy, but despairs that he himself now stands no chance of being Andy's favorite; so he was afraid to come back, going as far to tell Buzz just to save himself and go on without him, afraid Andy and his toys wouldn't love him anymore, not knowing that he reinvigorated Buzz's confidence, helping Woody escape a crate that Sid trapped him underneath.

When Buzz is taken away by Sid to be destroyed with a firework rocket. A desperate Woody teams up with Sid's mutant toys and stages a rescue of Buzz, confronting and terrifying Sid into running away in fear of his own toys. Woody and Buzz climb into the moving van, attracting the attention of Sid's dog Scud. When Buzz sacrifices himself to save Woody by tackling the dog, Woody attempts to rescue Buzz with Andy's RC. Unfortunately, Andy's toys watch him toss RC out of the van and assume that Woody was trying to murder RC. Mr. Potato Head then orders all of the toys to ambush Woody, by having the snake wrap around his legs to keep him from escaping. Rocky then picks up Woody and spins him around and throws him at a side of the truck. Hamm does a "Pig Pile" on Woody, which involves him jumping on his back. Eventually, he is then chucked out of the van by the other toys, and the toys celebrate at what seemed to be Woody's demise, almost getting run over by an oncoming car.

Luckily, Buzz and RC catch up with Woody, and he accelerates RC towards the moving van. Meanwhile, the toys are seen congratulating one another on a job well done. However, Lenny sees Woody and Buzz on RC, and warns all of the toys. Bo Peep gets a better look at them. This finally convinces the toys that Woody didn't harm Buzz and that Woody was telling the truth. This makes the toys feel guilty for what they did to Woody, and they decide to help Woody and Buzz back onto the van by having Slinky stretch his body. This works until RC's batteries suddenly deplete. This causes Slinky to get slung back onto the van.

Woody realizes that he can ignite Buzz's rocket. He then attempted to light the match (even thanking Sid for "providing" it to him earlier), although a passing car extinguished the match before it had a chance to light the wick, causing Woody to break down in despair until noticing that Buzz's helmet is directing sunlight and causing his hand to slightly burn, causing him to get the idea to use Buzz's helmet as well as his hand to light the rocket, successfully doing so. However, just before the rocket ignites, Woody then realizes that he may have just endangered himself, Buzz, and the others by lighting the rocket, since rockets explode once lit. As they catch up, we see the toys again, this time feeling awful over their loss of Woody and Buzz. However, Lenny excitedly tells the other toys that Woody and Buzz are catching up, making them just as excited to have them back. Woody manages to toss RC into the moving truck just as he and Buzz go soaring into the air. Buzz manages to detach from the rocket by means of his wings, which slice the duct tape, and glide through the air until they pass the moving truck and land safely inside Andy's car. At the end of the film, which takes place at Christmas, Woody and Buzz stage another reconnaissance mission to prepare for the new toy arrivals. As Woody wonders what gift may be worse than Buzz, Andy receives a puppy, much to his and Buzz's surprise and dread.

Toy Story 2

Woody-signature-ToyStory2
Buzz: "Woody, you're not a collector's item; you're a child's plaything. You are A TOY!"
Woody: "For how much longer? One more rip, and Andy's done with me. And what do I do then, Buzz? Huh? You tell me."
Buzz: "Somewhere in that pad of stuffing is a toy who taught me that life's only worth living if you're being loved by a kid. And I traveled all this way to rescue that toy because I believed him."
―Buzz Lightyear, as he reminds Woody who he truly is[src]

In Toy Story 2, Woody is first seen getting ready to go with Andy to Cowboy Camp. However, he's left stressed out because he was missing his hat, which he needed to go to Cowboy Camp with Andy. Eventually, Slinky managed to find the hat for Woody, although this resulted in Buster coming up to Andy's room, resulting in some chaos before it was revealed that they were in fact doing a round of hide and seek. He then was played by Andy alongside with Buzz, Hamm, and Bo Peep, although Andy accidentally rips his arm and is forced to leave him on the top shelf. Woody later has a nightmare where Andy (after returning home from Cowboy Camp) ends up deciding to dispose of Woody due to his ripped arm, and also ends up discovering Wheezy on top of the shelf, and not only that, but also learned that Mrs. Davis was about to do a yard sale, just barely warning the other toys in time, although Wheezy ended up being "chosen" to be sold. He then mounted a rescue operation with Buster to save Wheezy, although because of Buster having to jump, Woody ended up being dropped and then being discovered by a kid and her mom, who refused to buy it due to it being broken, eventually catching the attention of a collector named Al McWhiggin. Mrs. Davis refused to sell Woody to Al, who had other ideas. After causing a distraction by kicking a skateboard into a pile of stuff, causing it to collapse, Al proceeded to steal Woody.

Shortly after, he meets his three western toys: Bullseye, Jessie, and Stinky Pete The Prospector. He then finds out that he was the star of a popular late 1950's TV show called Woody's Roundup and Bullseye, Jessie and the Prospector were his Roundup gang on the show. Woody initially intends to go back to Andy, making Jessie bitter and resentful since the alternative to going to the toy museum is being put into storage. Al, after returning from work at Al's Toy Barn, attempted to place Woody in front of the other toys for a photo op (presumably for Mr. Konishi), although because the arm got caught in the braces via the remaining threads, Al accidentally ended up amputating Woody's broken arm, thus forcing him to postpone until he was repaired, also keeping the arm on his person in the meantime. While Al was asleep, Woody then tried to retrieve the arm, also narrowly avoiding both a Cheeto spill that Al unintentionally caused due to dropping the bowl while sleeping and his belch, but unfortunately for him, the TV all of a sudden turned on to Woody's Roundup, spoiling the attempt, with Woody blaming Jessie for it due to the remote being right beneath her. Afterward, he then ended up fully repaired by Al via hired help, with even Andy's name being painted over, and then was photographed. Woody then was glad at having his arm fixed, and then learned from Jessie her own history regarding her owner. He then gradually warms up to go to the toy museum with the Roundup gang, both due to sympathy to Jessie and also due to Prospector pointing out that Andy when he grows up most likely won't keep Woody anyway.

Ultimately, when Buzz, Slinky, Mr. Potato Head, Hamm and Rex arrive to save Woody, and although he refuses, after Buzz points out what being a toy really means over being in a museum, and watching the end credits for Woody's Roundup, he decides to go back to Andy and offers to take the others with him, and even attempts to get the rest of the Roundup members to come along. However, while Jessie and Bullseye end up agreeing with Woody to go meet Andy, Stinky Pete prevents them from escaping, with his also learning that it was in fact Prospector who was responsible for foiling the earlier escape attempt, because he wants to go to Japan since he was never sold to children, and displays embitterment towards space toys like Buzz. The Toys rush to the local airport to rescue Woody and take care of Stinky Pete by placing him inside a girl's Barbie bag, although not before Stinky Pete in a rage breaks Woody's arm again, and they go home with Jessie and Bullseye after rescuing them from the plane (as they never made it out of the luggage). He and the other toys then welcome Andy back their own way. Andy later fixes Woody's broken arm.

Toy Story 3

"So long, partner."
—Woody, saying his final farewell to Andy

In Toy Story 3, Woody is first with the other toys in Andy's playtime scene. Several years later, Woody and his friends take one chance to get a now 17-year-old Andy to notice them in what Woody calls Operation Playtime, in which the toys dial Andy's cellphone number on another phone. The plan ultimately backfires when Andy ignores his toys and, instead, assumes Molly is messing with his stuff. Woody then calls for another staff meeting in which he reminds the toys that their job isn't about getting played with but to be there for Andy. Woody assures them that no one is going to get thrown away, despite mentioning the friends who have been lost (he is still hurt at the loss of Bo Peep when her name is mentioned by Rex) and sent to new owners. He reminds the toys that Andy has held onto them during every yard sale and spring cleaning because he must have care for them, and tells them that Andy will place them in the attic, a place where there are games, books, the race-car track, the old TV, and Christmas decorations. He guarantees that Andy will continue to take care of the toys, then he climbs up on the dresser to see photos of Andy's high school graduation and a young Andy posing with his toys, even confessing to Buzz that he's also slightly worried about Andy's future intentions for them.

When Andy reenters the room to prepare for college, he gets out a trash bag and puts his toys inside the bag. When it comes to between Woody and Buzz, Andy tosses Woody into a box of possessions he is going to take to college and puts Buzz into the trash bag with the others. Woody, concerned for his friends, jumps out of the box to track the bag, but is relieved to see that Andy is intending to put the toys into the attic. However, Andy leaves the bag to help Molly, and then Woody witnesses in horror as Andy's mother takes the bag downstairs on the assumption that it is trash. Thinking quickly, Woody signals to Buster and instructs him to take him to the curb, but the dog is too old and weary to help Woody, and turns over instead to fall on top of Woody. After pushing him off, Woody rushes to the window to see Andy's mother place the bag of toys on the curb with other bags full of garbage. Spotting an approaching garbage truck down the street, Woody grabs a pair of scissors, jumps out of the window, slides down the drainage, and runs toward the bags. Using the scissors, he cuts open 2 trash bags but neither one holds his friends. After the bags are loaded into the truck and the truck goes down the street, Woody runs after the truck, but witnesses the trash bags being crunched by the truck's compactors. Woody is horrified, but turns to see a recycling bin scurrying into the garage on little feet, to his relief. Catching up with the toys who have climbed into a box bound for Sunnyside Daycare, Woody tells the toys that Andy's mother has mistaken the toys as trash and that Andy has intended to put the toys into the attic, but the toys don't listen to Woody and respond back by declaring that they're going to Sunnyside instead, believing that Andy doesn't want them anymore.

Arriving at Sunnyside, the toys meet Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear (Lotso) who gives them a tour around Sunnyside and assigns them to the Caterpillar Room. Woody tries desperately to convince the toys to go back home, but his friends believe that daycare is perfect for them and convinces Woody in joining them to be played with by the children of the daycare. Woody is disappointed to hear that Buzz is staying at the daycare with the others as well. Woody believes that his friends shouldn't turn their back on Andy so quickly and calls them selfish for deciding to move on with their new life at the daycare and without Andy. Woody decides to go back to Andy alone, and Buzz steps forward to shake hands with Woody as a symbol of saying goodbye, but Woody turns away and heads out the door, still frustrated. As he sneaks across the hallway, trying to find his way out, a janitor cart comes his way, and Woody grabs the bottom of the cart, but the cart goes into a bathroom. Woody then sneaks into one of the stalls, climbs up the toilet, jumps to the top of the stall, and slips out of the open window.

Overhead Sunnyside

After climbing up to the roof of the daycare, Woody looks around to try to find his way out, but then his hat gets blown off by a gust of wind, landing next to a kite on the roof, which Woody uses to glide over the playground and over the wall. Just as he makes a perfect landing, a sudden updraft yanks him high into the air. Woody panics and wraps himself around the kite's bar, but the bar snaps and Woody plummets to the ground. He then crashes into the tree, hitting branches on his way down, then he falls from the tree, but he stops inches above the pavement due to his pull-string caught in a branch. Woody tries to struggle himself free, but is forced to go limp when he sees Bonnie approaching. She finds Woody, frees him from the tree, puts him into her backpack, and goes home with her mother, unknowingly without his hat.

At Bonnie's house, Woody meets Bonnie's toys, Dolly The Doll, Mr. Pricklepants The Hedgehog, Trixie the Triceratops, Buttercup the Unicorn, the Peas-in-a-Pod and Totoro. Although he enjoys playtime with Bonnie and her toys, he still wants to go home to Andy so Bonnie's toys start up the computer for Woody to find the direction from Bonnie's house to Andy's, which to his joy, turns out to be right around the corner. As he tells Bonnie's toys that if they get donated to Sunnyside that they tell Andy's other toys that he made it home, Bonnie's toys become surprised to see that he has come from the daycare and want to know how he escaped. When Woody asks them what they meant, Mr. Pricklepants tells Woody that Sunnyside, ruled by Lotso, is a place of ruin and despair. Woody then asks why, and Bonnie's toys direct him to Chuckles The Clown, who explains that he, along Lotso and Big Baby, once belonged to a sweet girl named Daisy, who accidentally left them in a park. Lotso, Chuckles and Big Baby eventually made their way back to Daisy, only to find that Daisy had replaced Lotso with another toy bear, turning the pink bear bitter and ruthless. They found Sunnyside, and Lotso and Big Baby rose to power quickly, turning the daycare into a toy prison, while Chuckles had been taken home by Bonnie. Chuckles gives Woody Big Baby's old pendant as he finishes his story. Woody then realizes he has to go back to Sunnyside to save his imprisoned friends, despite objections from Bonnie's toys, who believe returning there will be sacrificial and suicidal.

The next day he stows away inside Bonnie's backpack to go back to the daycare. Woody climbs through the ceiling to go to the Caterpillar Room and watches in horror as his friends get played roughly by the toddlers. Just then, Chatter Telephone rings to get his attention, and warns Woody that he should never have come back because due to more guards and patrols, he and his friends are never going to escape. Chatter Telephone tells Woody that the garbage chute is the only escape route out of the daycare and that he needs to negotiate through doors, hallways, the lobby, the playground, and the walls to reach there. Chatter Telephone warns Woody of the Monkey who monitors the security cameras through the night, and the first thing he has to do in order to escape is to get rid of the monkey. After Woody calls to his friends once the toddlers leave the Caterpillar Room, the toys become overjoyed to see him, then they apologize for not listening to him. Woody, in return, apologizes for leaving them and asserts that they will stick together. He then formulates an elaborate plan on helping the toys escape. Upon learning that Lotso has reset Buzz into thinking he is a Space Ranger once again, Woody decides to get Buzz back on their side as part of his escape plan.

That night, Woody witnesses Ken and Buzz taking roll call to ensure that all the toys are present. As the two walk off to catch Mr. Potato Head, who attempts to open a locked window before being spotted, Woody then signals to Slinky to emerge out from his cell, then the two go through the ceiling to the office to subdue the Monkey. Slinky lowers Woody, who is holding a bag to place over the Monkey's head, but the Monkey notices them and starts screeching, startling Woody and Slinky, who slip from the ceiling and fall to the Monkey. The Monkey then runs toward the door to alert Lotso's guards, but Woody uses a wire to trip the Monkey. He then fights the Monkey, who seems to overpower him as he repeatedly bangs his cymbals on Woody's head. Woody then yells to Slinky to grab the tape, and they manage to tape up the monkey and lock him in a filing cabinet. After finding the key, Woody tells Slinky to fire it under the door, across the hall, and into the Caterpillar Room. Later, Woody and Slinky are joined by Barbie, who has retrieved a Buzz Lightyear instruction manual, then the three head back to the Caterpillar Room to see that Buzz, after being trapped in a storage bin by Rex and Hamm, has broken himself free. Woody orders them to stop Buzz from escaping, then he, Barbie, and Slinky rush over to help. As Barbie unscrews Buzz's back compartment, Woody flicks the Play-Demo switch, but to no avail. As Hamm reads the steps on how to reset Buzz, Woody quickly tells Rex to insert his finger into a tiny hole below the switch and hold it long enough to cause Buzz to shut down. Just then, Buzz springs back up, knocking everyone off him, then he starts speaking Spanish, much to the shock of Woody and the others. Woody tells Buzz that he and the toys are "amigos" to get Buzz back on their side. Although Woody feels the need to switch Buzz back, he realizes that time is running out so he and his friends head out of the Caterpillar Room.

Outside, Woody and his friends rejoin with the others at the playground. As they head for the garbage chute, Woody, Bullseye, and the Aliens become separated from Jessie and the others when a security truck pulls up toward them. As Woody, Bullseye, and the Aliens negotiate the playground in which Big Baby is sitting on a swing, they accidentally attract Big Baby's attention, but they dive under the bucket, safe from Big Baby's eyesight. After rejoining with Jessie and the others, they finally make it to the garbage chute, where Buzz does an acrobatic stunt to get the lid open, then the toys climb into the chute. Woody goes first to see that the chute is leading to an open dumpster, then he signals to his friends to come down, but not all at once. The toys, however, thinks Woody has told them to come down all at once and they do, colliding with Woody, who almost falls into the dumpster, but Jessie pulls him up. Just as Woody and the toys are about to leap to freedom with help from Slinky, Lotso and his gang corner them. Seeing Woody among the toys, Lotso tells the toys that Andy doesn't want them anymore, to which Woody responds by labeling Lotso's remarks as a lie, but Lotso asks Woody why Andy is leaving if he loves Woody so much. He labels Woody as a piece of plastic made to be thrown away and coaxes the toys to go back to the Caterpillar Room to avoid the approaching garbage truck and join Lotso's family again. Ken, having switched sides because he truly loved Barbie, stands up to Lotso as the Pink Bear tells the toys that Andy is the one who has thrown them away and that not one kid will ever love a toy, Woody brings up the subject of Daisy to try to remind Lotso about his previous owner, but Lotso doesn't want anything to do with Daisy. It's during this heated argument between Woody and Lotso that Lotso's cohorts become increasing aware of their leader's evil nature. As Woody argues with Lotso, he shows Big Baby's old pendant to Lotso and Big Baby, and the latter notices his old possession, causing him to remember Daisy. Woody then tosses the pendant to Big Baby, who picks it up to take a look at the token of his lost love and sniffles, "Mama." This makes Lotso snap as he snatches away the pendant and destroy it, and pokes Big Baby hard with his cane for still loving Daisy. Big Baby then picks up Lotso, throws him into the dumpster, and closes the lid, making a bridge available for Woody and his friends to escape. Unfortunately, one of the Aliens gets his feet stuck in a dumpster lid, prompting Woody to go back to free the Alien by slightly opening the lid. Lotso, having caught a glimpse of Woody through the opening, grabs Woody and pull him into the dumpster as a way to get revenge for being foiled and humiliated just as a garbage truck arrives. Woody's friends jump onto the dumpster, only for them to end up inside the garbage truck as well. During the ride, Buzz is crushed by a TV, resetting him to his normal self and causing him to regain his memory, such as recognizing Woody (Woody tells Buzz that he has gone "beyond infinity").

After the toys are dumped at the Tri-County Landfill, the Aliens spot the claw and run for it, and Woody yells at them to come back, but is cut off by a bulldozer that plows the Aliens away. Just then, another plow pushes Woody and the other toys into a trench, and they fall onto a long conveyor belt of garbage leading them into a dark tunnel. Seeing a set of shredders looming ahead, they grab onto a metal object so that they hang from a magnetic ceiling, safe from the shredders. Just then, Lotso, who is stuck underneath a golf bag, calls for help, and Woody, not having the heart to leave Lotso to die, drops down to rescue Lotso, risking his life in the process, but the golf bag, with some golf clubs inside, is too heavy for him to lift up. Seeing the danger Woody has placed himself in, Buzz drops down to assist Woody in freeing Lotso. They utilize one of the golf clubs to pry up the bag, letting the bear crawl out, and Woody makes Lotso take his hand as the golf club he and Buzz are holding on pulls the three up to the ceiling, seconds before the golf bag is pulverized. Woody calls to his friends to remind them that they are all still together, but they're not hanging from the ceiling. Hearing Jessie call out from the conveyor belt below, Woody, Buzz, and Lotso drop from the ceiling to catch up with the group. Seeing a glow up ahead, Rex then tells Woody that the toys will be fine, thinking the glow's daylight, but Woody sees that the "daylight" is a glow from an incinerator that the conveyor belt is pushing him and his friends toward. Woody and the toys run for it, desperate to escape their doom, but the conveyor belt keeps pushing them toward the furnace. Lotso then notices an emergency stop button, runs over to grab the lower rung of a ladder leading to the button, and calls to Woody to help him climb up the ladder. Woody and Buzz rush over to help Lotso, who climbs up the ladder and reaches the button. Woody shouts at Lotso to push the button, but Lotso gives him and the toys a menacing glare, throws an insult at Woody: "Where's your kid now, Sheriff?" and runs off, leaving the toys to die in the incinerator. The toys then tumble into the furnace, where tons of shredded garbage are cascading down an enormous bowl toward the flames. They try to climb away, but realize that they've been deprived of any escape chance and take hands as they accept oblivion as family. As Woody continues to climb his way out of the furnace, he turns to see that Buzz has accepted death as fate, having taken Jessie's hand with his left arm. He reaches out his right one for Woody's, and Woody, coming to realize that this is the unfortunate end for him and his friends, takes Buzz's hand with his left arm and Slinky's paw with his right one. Just as the toys prepare for their fiery death, a light shines on Woody's face, and Woody looks up to see a giant claw crane suddenly appear from above, drop down onto the toys, and scoops them up. As Woody and his friends ride in the air, they turn to notice the Aliens in the driver's cab, where they have taken control of the claw to rescue the toys. Woody heaves a sigh of relief, grateful that he and his friends are all safe and sound, as the claw carries them out of the furnace and places them gently on the ground. Hamm and Slinky express their desire to get back at Lotso for having them almost killed, but Woody convinces them to forget it as he believes that Lotso isn't worth it, but at the same time, he and his friends have other important things to worry about, such as the fact that they are still alive and need to go home before Andy leaves for college. They hitch a ride in Sid's garbage truck while Lotso is found by a different garbage man and tied to the front grille of a different garbage truck.

Woody-inherited

Woody passed on to his new owner Bonnie.

After the toys return home, they clean themselves of dirt and grime that has made its way onto them during their escape and their return home through the garbage dump. After climbing back up to Andy's room, Woody heads for a box bound for college while the others climb into a box bound for attic, but Woody pauses for a moment to shake hands with Buzz, unable to admit that the two best friends are now separating ways after all they have been through. The other toys say their farewell words to Woody, and Jessie tells Woody that she still knows about Buzz's Spanish mode, which briefly makes Buzz suspicious. After Buzz bids him farewell and climbs into the attic box, Woody climbs into the college box and takes a possibly last look at his friends as they close the attic box. He then watches through a hole in the college box as Andy's mother makes her emotional farewell as she lets go of Andy so he can move on with his new life. Woody, who has struggled to accept that his role in Andy's life as his toy was coming to an end throughout the movie, finally realizes that he too must let go of Andy and move on with his own existence as a toy. While Andy turns away to say goodbye to Molly and Buster, he quickly jumps out of the college box, grabs a sharpie and a post-it note, rushes over and climbs onto to the attic box, and writes a message to Andy for him to donate the toys. Seeing that there is no time to make it back to the college box, Woody, unnoticed, stows away in the other box. When Andy reads the note, he decides to donate the toys, so he stops at Bonnie's house while moving out to college and hands the toys to Bonnie, but when Bonnie looks inside the box for more, she surprisingly finds her "cowboy dolly", making Andy confused about how Woody has gotten into the box. Bonnie wants to have Woody, but Andy is reluctant to give away his favorite toy, which gives her a disappointed look on her face. Andy then realizes how much Bonnie loves Woody, just like he has done during his childhood, and in one last symbolic gesture, he finally gives Woody to Bonnie, telling her that they've been through a lot together and he means a lot to him, so she has got to take good care of him.

Depart

Woody and the gang, watching Andy leave.

Andy then briefly stays at Bonnie's house to play with his old toys, along with Bonnie and her toys, one last time before leaving. After Bonnie is taken inside her house by her mother for lunch, Woody and his friends sit up to watch Andy's car disappear down the road. Woody says his farewell to Andy, knowing that he will really miss his good old days as Andy's toy: "So long, partner." He is immediately comforted by Buzz as the two accept that their life with Andy is now complete (still Woody will always love Andy very, very much, no matter what), and then Woody introduces Buzz to Bonnie's toys.

During the credits, Woody reads his friends a message from Sunnyside, notifying them that it has become a happier place for the toys there, but finds that it is written by Ken instead of Barbie, to his dismay. The next day, he is surprised to see the drawings Bonnie has made for her toys, including the ones handed over from Andy. Finally, as he enjoys watching Buzz and Jessie perform a paso doble to "Hay Un Amigo En Mi", the Spanish version of "You've Got a Friend in Me", Woody tosses Jessie a flower and Jessie catches it by its stem in her mouth.

Toy Story 4

Woody departs from Bo

Woody says goodbye to Bo.

"Buzz: "To Infinity"
Woody: "and Beyond"
—Woody and Buzz saying their goodbye.

In Toy Story 4, Woody is first seen in a flashback nine years prior (before Toy Story 3 but after Toy Story 2). Organizing to rescue RC, who is stuck in a flooding storm drain, Woody goes through Molly Davis' window and with Bo Peep's help to pull RC out of the drain and back to the house. As he ascends to the window however, he notices that Bo has been placed in a box and taken away to a strange man, who leaves the box outside in the rain while returning for something he had forgotten. Rather than go through the window, Woody goes down and finds Bo, offering to bring her back in the house, but Bo declines as all toys eventually get taken away. She notes that toys go missing all the time, implying that Woody could come with her without notice, and although Woody is sorely tempted, he stops when he hears Andy call out for him. Bo pulls Woody's hat down, and bids him farewell.

Back to the present, Woody is at Bonnie's House, although it was clear that Bonnie began to lose interest in him as he is often neglected by her. When the toys are in the closet, he is shown to have overlapping roles with Dolly, sometimes repeating her own orders much to her annoyance. Once again when Bonnie takes toys out to play with, Woody is left out, only this time it is worse when Bonnie takes Woody's sheriff badge off and places it on Jessie, preferring to play with her, adding to Woody's sense of displacement.

Later, Woody insists that a toy accompany Bonnie on her first day in kindergarten to make her feel better, but Dolly objects on the basis that Bonnie could get in trouble. Woody tries to argue that going with Andy helped get him through kindergarten, but Dolly derisively overrules Woody, repeating that "Bonnie isn't Andy". Even so, Woody sneaks into Bonnie's backpack and goes along anyway.

At kindergarten orientation, Bonnie is lonely and can't seem to make friends with other children. About to cry, Woody stealthily distracts Bonnie and places arts and crafts on her table, which she becomes inspired to use to create a completely new toy; Forky. Woody keeps an eye on things from the backpack, learning that the Andersons will be going on a road trip soon, and then relaxes. Looking at Forky on the other side of the backpack, Woody congratulates himself for being right about having a toy present, before Forky's eye twitches of its own volition.

Woody & Forky

Woody introduces Forky

Bonnie then throws her backpack in her room, and Woody comes out with Forky, introducing him to anyone. Much to Woody's surprise, Forky throws himself in a nearby trash can, and because Woody knows how important Forky is to Bonnie, he takes it upon himself to restrain the deranged toy from constantly throwing himself away. After a montage of struggling to stop Forky from trashing himself, Woody finds himself in the RV the Andersons had rented for their road trip. Talking with Buzz Lightyear, Woody is finally taking a breather, but when Buzz mistakes his "conscience" or "inner voice" for his audio sounds, thus causing a noise and forcing Woody to duck for cover, Forky manages to make it to the window and jump out.

Woody bonds with Forky

Woody bonds with Forky on the road.

Alarmed, Woody goes out the window after Forky, eventually finding him trying to shove himself into the ground. Pulling him out, Woody walks with/drags Forky with him, impressing on Forky the importance of being there for "Andy", before correcting himself to "Bonnie". Catching his words, Forky asks who "Andy" is, and the two of them get into an agreeable conversation about Woody's time with Andy. Asking Forky why he's obsessed with trash, and learning that Forky is reassured by it, Woody uses that to show Forky that Forky provides that same reassurance to Bonnie. Although not quite the intended outcome, as Forky assumes he's "Bonnie's trash", Forky does become excited to return to Bonnie at last, and the two toys make their way to the nearest trailer park to meet up with the RV.

On the way however, Woody notices Bo Peep's lamp in the window of a nearby antique store, and takes a detour inside to look for her, but she is nowhere to be found. Unfortunately however, he runs afoul of a doll with a broken voice box named Gabby Gabby, who tries to take his voice box. Using a nearby person as a distraction, Woody makes a run for it and successfully escapes from her Bensons, although Forky gets captured during the chase. Woody tries to get back with Bonnie, but doesn't quite make it, and so circles back to recover Forky.

Passing through a playground on the way, Woody ends up grabbed by a child who also happens to have Bo Peep in hand, and the two toys meet again for the first time in nine years. At first opportunity, Bo grabs Woody and they sneak away into the brush. There, a mobile toy car disguised as a skunk rushes at Woody and nearly runs him over, and it is revealed that Bo's sheep were driving, and although they are happy to see Woody, he doesn't remember their names or gender.

Woody & Bo Peep TS4 01

Woody and Bo Peep, along with Giggle McDimples atop the carousel.

After being introduced to Bo's friend Giggle McDimples and some army toys, Woody asks for Bo's help to free Forky, for old time's sake, reminding Bo of her importance as a toy to Molly Davis. Bo agrees, and they both ride in the skunk car to the carousel, although Woody accidentally rips Bo's arm off while helping her out. After tapping it back on, together they go to the top of the carousel where Bo shows Woody the glory of the open world, the view of the entire carnival. From there they move above the ground to the roof of the antique store, meeting up with Buzz, followed by Bunny and Ducky. Assuring the later two that they can be adopted by Bonnie, Woody secures their help in the operation to free Forky.

TF4 Gang

Buzz, Woody, Bo's sheep, Bo herself, Giggle McDimples, Ducky, and Bunny enter the antique store.

Although told by Bo to follow her lead, Woody notices Bonnie and attempts to quickly grab Forky and leave with Bonnie, which fails and ends up getting Bo's sheep captured by a Benson. Angry, Bo takes Woody to find Duke Caboom who can help, and although he is helpful in getting Woody and Bo to the cabinet where Forky is held by Gabby Gabby, Gabby Gabby expected the attempt and forces them to retreat, sending her Bensons to capture Woody, very nearly managing to rip Woody's voice box out of his back. After Giggle McDimples ends up eaten by a cat named Dragon, the toys use Duke Caboom to lead the cat out of the store, pulling them along for the ride, until they have safely if roughly escape.

Sore and sullen, the other toys refuse to try again to save Forky and turn hostile towards Woody, who angrily justifies his motivations as loyalty, something a "lost" toy like Bo wouldn't understand. Insulted by his words, the toys depart and Buzz himself also leaves on the advice of his "inner voice" audio sounds. Undaunted, Woody heads back into the antique store alone, where he is quickly surrounded by Gabby Gabby and four Bensons. Approaching him slowly, Gabby Gabby soothingly appeals to Woody's camaraderie as a fellow toy just trying to make children happy, relating to his past joys, and asking that she only have the chance to experience even a small bit of what he had. Moved, Woody willingly agrees to give Gabby Gabby his voice box in exchange for Forky's freedom.

After the Bensons transfer voice boxes and patch Woody up, Woody goes to leave with Forky in Bonnie's backpack (which she would be coming back for). Forky however holds back, wanting to see Gabby Gabby get adopted by Harmony. Harmony however, is disinterested in Gabby Gabby and throws her in a box, much to Forky's confusion. Knowing Gabby Gabby's pain, Woody sends Forky on ahead to tell the other toys to meet him at the carousel. Woody himself stays behind to comfort Gabby Gabby.

Finding the distraught, numb doll in the box, she offers to give Woody his voice box back as she "doesn’t need it anymore", but Woody insists she keep the voice box and come with him to be adopted by Bonnie. Gabby Gabby is skeptical, but is convinced when Bo Peep arrives to encourage her, having had a change of heart about Woody. All together, the toys set off to reach the carousel, stopping briefly to seize the opportunity to help Gabby Gabby get adopted by a lost child on the way, before finally arriving at the carousel.

Extending the RV's awning to make a bridge to the carousel, Woody prepares to leave Bo once again to return to his child, but a moment of indecision and wistfulness takes him, and after Buzz encourages him, Woody decides to stay with Bo. After bidding a heartfelt farewell to the rest of Bonnie's toys, Woody, Bo, and their friends begin their new lives together, helping lost toys find owners.

Toy Story Toons

Hawaiian Vacation

WelcomeToParadise

Woody welcomes Barbie and Ken to "Paradise".

In the first Toy Story Toons episode, Hawaiian Vacation, Woody first addresses his friends that Bonnie is now on winter break after the bell at Sunnyside has rung, so it is time for them to have a week of relaxation. However, he is surprised to see that Barbie and Ken have unexpectedly appeared in Bonnie's room. When Ken tells Woody that he and Barbie have stowed away in Bonnie's backpack, hoping to join her in Hawaii, Woody tells Ken that he is in Bonnie's room, much to Ken's dismay. After learning from Barbie about the vacation plans she and Ken have formulated for each other, Woody and his friends recreate various scenarios of Hawaii for the two using whatever they can find around Bonnie's house.

First, Woody acts as one of the aloha spirits who welcome Barbie and Ken to "Paradise" and directs the two to their vacation plans that have been planned for them. Second, he tells Bullseye, on which Barbie is riding on, to ride like the wind. Third, he is seen dancing a luau with Dolly and Mr. Pricklepants to give entertainment for Barbie and Ken. Fourth, he tells Barbie that the place for her and Ken's first kiss is ready, but Barbie, having that one covered, takes Ken outside in the snow to have thier kiss, which is witnessed by Woody and the other toys through a window. However, the two then falls into the snow, and Woody and his friends use a hair dryer to melt the ice they are trapped in.

Small Fry

Woody minibuzztssmallfry

Woody and Mini-Buzz in Small Fry.

In the second Toy Story Toons episode, Small Fry, after Rex returns home, Woody asks Rex how his time at Poultry Palace with Buzz was but then he smells something like chicken fingers. Then, the smaller Buzz appears with Rex, jumping out of Bonnie's backpack. Despite Rex explaining why Buzz is now smaller, Woody of course understands something is wrong. He asks where the real Buzz is. He continues to argue with Rex when the latter remained adamant that the ball pit had shrunk Buzz and that he is the real Buzz, with Woody irritably pointing out that the "Buzz" that's currently with them is about three inches tall, much shorter than the real Buzz. He tries to play it nice with Mini-Buzz and ask him what happened with the real Buzz, but after Mini-Buzz takes Woody's hat and starts making a ruckus in the room, Woody tackles him. Woody and the toys devise a plan to rescue the Buzz, who suddenly shows up in Bonnie's room, much to the toys' happiness.

Partysaurus Rex

In the third Toy Story Toons episode, Partysaurus Rex, Woody is seen when Rex is chastised by most of the other toys for popping their bubble they were blowing up, and again near the end when a flood pours out of the bathroom door after it is opened.

Toy Story OF TERROR!

In Toy Story OF TERROR!, Woody is first seen watching a scary Halloween movie with Buzz, Jessie, Rex, Trixie, Mr. Potato Head and Mr. Pricklepants. Later, when the toys stop at the Sleep Well motel, Mr. Potato head decides to leave the bag to look around for something to get for Hamm. Despite the fact Woody tells him not to leave as a motel is one of the easiest places for a toy to get lost, Potato Head leaves anyway. Rex, Trixie and Mr. Pricklepants follow him and Woody and Buzz must bring them back. Jessie comes with them and soon they discover Mr. Potato Head is gone and they must find him. After Trixie falls down a hole, Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Rex and Mr. Pricklepants follow her down the hole and are under the motel. While trying to find Trixie, Mr. Pricklepants and Rex are taken by a mysterious creature, which is revealed to be an iguana named Mr. Jones. Woody, Buzz and Jessie run for their live and find one of Potato Head's arms. The arm leads them to a bathroom where Woody and Buzz get taken by Mr. Jones. After Jessie is taken by Jones, Woody, Buzz and the others are seen in a cabinet and reunite with Jessie. They are all being held by the motel manager Ron Tompkins who is using Mr. Jones to steal the toys of his guests so he can sell them online in bidding wars. After Woody is purchased, Ron puts him in a box and gets ready to stand him off. Luckily Jessie escapes and frees Woody. They manage to rescue their friends by exposing Ron's scheme to Bonnie and her mom.

Toy Story That Time Forgot

In Toy Story That Time Forgot, Woody is first seen while Bonnie plays with him. Later, Bonnie takes Woody, Buzz, Rex, Trixie and Angel Kitty to her friend Mason's house. Bonnie goes to join Mason at his new game console and the toys are left in the playroom. There they meet Reptillus Maximus, The Cleric and the Battlesaurus. While Rex and Trixie follow Reptillus, Woody, Buzz and Angel Kitty are grabbed by the other Battlesaurus. While Rex and Trixie are with Reptillus, Woody and Buzz discover that Mason hasn't played with Battlesaurus yet and they don't even know that they toys. In the Arena of Woe, Woody and Buzz inform Trixie of their discovery when suddenly they are attacked by Reptillus, Woody tries to fen him off with a red crayon he found, however Reptillus breaks the crayon and Woody and Buzz are forced to him on head-to-head. After Trixie orders Reptillus to back off, The Cleric summons the Goliathan and it swallows Woody and Buzz whole. Later, Woody and Buzz are brought to the Cleric who uses Rex, who is being controlled by Giant Robotic Arms, to fish out Woody and Buzz.

The boys there discover that The Cleric is watching Mason and Bonnie play on the console. They realize that he knows he and the other Battlesaurus are toys and is determined to make sure that they don't find out. The Cleric then demands that Woody, Buzz and Angel Kitty be tossed down a shredder. However right when they're about to be shredded, Trixie, who has made it to the game console, and convinced Reptillus to help her turn it off, has gotten Bonnie and Mason's attention and managed to save her friends. Later the toys all go home.

Relationships

Buzz Lightyear

Woody and Buzz

Woody and Buzz

When Woody first met Buzz, he considered him a rival. Prior to Buzz's arrival, Woody was Andy's favorite toy- being the hero in all of Andy's imaginary scenarios with the other toys. However, on Andy's 7th birthday, he is given a Buzz Lightyear doll- much to the horror of the other toys (as new toys mean old ones get replaced). Woody, leader of the toys, was the first to approach Buzz (who wasn't aware he was a toy, but a real space ranger). Woody disliked how all the other toys were quickly impressed by Buzz, feeling his leader role being threatened. Woody slowly started to see Andy favor Buzz over him, as his room became decorated in Buzz apparel and Woody's hero role in play were played instead by Buzz. All this time, however, Buzz respected Woody as the "sheriff" and leader of the toys, oblivious to Woody's dislike for him. Over the course of the first movie, Buzz and Woody slowly build a friendship and help each other out of their crisis- Woody feeling inferior to Buzz because of all the admiration Buzz gets, and Buzz having an identity crisis learning he is a toy. By the end, the two have reconciled and become best friends, with Buzz being Woody's second in command.

In the second movie, roughly 6 months after the first film, Buzz leads a rescue party to find Woody, who has been stolen by a greedy collector/toy shop owner named Al. Buzz tells the team that they can't give up on Woody, after all he had done for them and Woody didn't give up even after what the toys did to him in the first movie (such as throw him out of a moving van). Upon finding Woody, Buzz is disappointed to learn Woody plans to go to Japan with the rest of the Roundup gang, as Woody fears Andy will soon outgrow him-and this way, he will be adored by children for years and the gang won't have to be put back in storage, as the museum was only interested in the set if Woody was part of it. Buzz tells Woody that he once didn't feel what it was like to be loved by a child, only for a toy (Woody) to teach him that feeling, and he traveled across town to find him, feeling like his journey meant nothing to Woody, saying that being adored behind glass rather than be played with is no life and departs with the others. Woody gets a change of heart and attempts to leave with Buzz and the others, convincing Jessie and Bullseye to come with him, only to be stopped by Stinky Pete, who demands that they all go to Japan, having a hatred for space toys and owned toys alike, after he was never bought in stores by a child, and instead had to watch as every other toy was sold. The other toys pursue Al when he collects the Round Up Gang to take to the airport. Once there, Buzz follows the suitcase, opening it up to get Woody out. Instead he finds Pete, who knocks him out, with Woody coming to his defense. Before Pete can dismember Woody, Buzz and the others use the flash from a camera they found in a simiar bag to stop Pete. When Woody goes to save Jessie, Buzz and Bullseye follow alongside the plane as the four reunite, celebrating their adventure. Woody and Buzz's friendship is rekindled at the end.

In the third movie, Woody and Buzz still have a strong friendship with each other, and co leadership to the rest of Andy's toys, despite the fact that Andy is now 17 years old. Though they express uncertainty over what will happen, they vow their friendship for infinity and beyond. Later, their relationship becomes dampened when Woody tries unsuccessfully to convince the other toys to go back to Andy's. When Buzz offers a parting handshake, a frustrated Woody refuses and leaves. After escaping Sunnyside and Buzz returns to his regular persona, Woody is delighted, telling Buzz he went "beyond infinity". While they're at the landfill, Buzz helps Woody rescue Lotso from being shredded. As they inch closer to a fiery fate at the incinerator, Woody and Buzz grab hands, knowing they'll die together, until the Aliens manage to save them with a claw.

In the fourth movie, Buzz provides moral support for Woody when he has to watch over Forky, with Buzz even offering to do it for him. They also tell each other to listen to their "inner voice" over what they should do. After Buzz assures that Bonnie will be fine without him, Woody decides to stay with Bo Peep and live out a new life of helping other toys find owners. They share a hug before parting ways, knowing their friendship is "to infinity and beyond."

Bo Peep

Woody/Bo Peep

Woody and Bo

Woody's relationship with Bo Peep was strong over the four movies. In the first film, Bo Peep and Woody were implied to be dating or at least interested in each other, with Bo Peep flirting after Woody "saved" her sheep during Andy's play scenario. When Buzz is introduced to the toys, Bo Peep tells Woody not to be jealous, as Buzz is an impressive toy, trying to convince Woody that he's still Andy's favorite. After Woody accidentally knocks Buzz from the window, Bo Peep tries to stop the other toys from a revolt against Woody, showing that she does care for him. When Buzz and Woody are found by Sid, she wishes that Woody could be there with her to see how much Andy misses Woody. She is among the toys that Woody talks to from Sid's window, but is horrified when Woody accidentally shows them Buzz's severed arm (from when Buzz tried to fly and fell from the second floor). She departs with the other toys, losing her belief in Woody. Near the end, she assists the other toys in trying to get Woody and Buzz back into the van, instructing another toy to activate the van's ramp. Eventually the pair are reunited and that Christmas in the new house, she covers Woody's face in kisses under the mistletoe (planted by her sheep).

The second film Bo Peep has a smaller role, but her relationship with Woody is the same. When Woody falls into a depression after being shelved due to his arm being ripped, she calls out to him to see if he's okay, exchanging a worried look with Buzz when Woody isolates himself. When the yard sale arrives, she and the other toys watch as Woody rescues Wheezy the Penguin, then watches as Buzz attempts to rescue Woody from Al, wondering why someone would want to steal him, and visibly upset that he's gone. When Buzz organizes a rescue mission to find his friend, Bo Peep gives him a kiss on the head, telling him to give that to Woody when he's found.

Bo is absent from the third film, but Woody remains in love with her, going quiet when Rex mentions Bo as one of the toys they lost as Andy grew up. As seen in the fourth film's prologue, Woody was tempted to join Bo as she was given away, but was forced to stay behind as he heard Andy looking for him.

In the fourth film the pair are reunited, happy to see one another again, as their feelings never went away. Woody tries to convince her to come with him so Bonnie can take her in, but she refuses, trying to get Woody to instead stay with her in the fairgrounds. By the end, Woody decides to stay with Bo, feeling he belonged more with her and the other fair toys to help other toys in need than go with the others to Bonnie, who started to lose interest in him.

Jessie

Vlcsnap-2012-09-02-20h13m56s17

Woody and Jessie

Woody and Jessie have a very sibling-like relationship. In the second film, Jessie is overjoyed to meet Woody, as he is her ticket out of storage. Learning he has an owner, she falls into an anxiety attack, angry Woody would come all this way to get her hopes up, only to try and leave again. She at first doesn't have a lot of respect for Woody, and he doesn't show much to her, leading the two to fight a lot. Angered when Woody is fixed up and still plans to get back to Andy, she goes off by herself. Woody decides to approach her and the two have a moment, as Jessie reveals she was once owned by a girl named Emily, who adored her as much as Andy adores Woody. However, Emily started to grow up, and Jessie was forgotten. When she goes to find something that rolled under the bed, Emily picks up Jessie, putting her in a box with her other cowgirl related things. Jessie is once again happy to be with Emily, but learns she is being donated and watches as Emily drives off. Woody realizes Jessie is traumatized from her past, and decides to stay with the group to be donated to Japan, realizing that he could eventually share the same fate with Andy. The two form a friendship as they watch all of the old Woody's Roundup videos. The two, along with Bullseye, start to play pretend and end up in a tickle fight as Buzz and the others barge in to save Woody. Woody is firm that he's staying with the Gang, only to change his mind after a pep talk from Buzz, convincing Jessie to come with him. Jessie shows uncertainty, but Woody encourages her by asking if she wants that feeling of being loved by a kid again. The two are stopped by Pete, who reveals he framed Jessie the other night for turning the TV on as Woody tried to get his arm back from Al and escape. The two eventually are in the airport as Jessie is unable to get free from the suitcase and packed into the plane. Woody goes to rescue her as he once again tries to convince her to go with him. Jessie fears Andy won't like her, with Woody reassuring her. Once he mentions Molly, Andy's little sister, Jessie is overjoyed and decides to go with him. As they try to leave the plane, Woody slips from the rail, Jessie holding onto him by his ripped arm. Woody tells her to let go of the plane and she'll just have to trust him as the swing to Buzz and Bullseye.

In the third film, Jessie and Woody's relationship gets rocky as she is among the toys to be in storage (although they later are accidentally thrown out, then stowed away in the box to Sunnyside), Jessie's trauma comes back, fearing that it's Emily all over again. She is among the toys that are jealous that Woody is being taken to college with Andy, unconvinced when Woody tries to tell them they weren't meant to be thrown out, later angry when Woody leaves Sunnyside without them. However, their friendship is rekindled when Woody comes back to Sunnyside to break them all out, as the toys now know Lotso is a dictator who forces the new toys to be abused by the rowdy kids, while he and the other higher-ranked toys get loved and gently played with by the older kids.

In the fourth film, Jessie still looks out for Woody, despite Bonnie losing interest in the latter (to the point that Bonnie gives Woody's badge to Jessie instead). They later have an emotional goodbye when Woody decides to join Bo Peep, with Woody handing his badge and leadership role to Jessie.

Slinky Dog

Woody and Slinky

Woody and Slinky

Before Buzz's arrival, Slinky Dog was Woody's closest friend. They often played a friendly game of checkers together.

Out of all the toys, Slinky appears the most loyal to Woody - usually backing him faithfully to the hilt, only occasionally showing dismay at some of his actions across the series (namely Woody's impersonation of Buzz from Sid's house, or Woody turning his back on Andy in favour of being donated to the Konishi Toy Museum by Al McWhiggin).

Bullseye

Woody and Bullseye

Woody and Bullseye

From their initial meeting in Toy Story 2, Bullseye has shown unswerving loyalty to Woody - sometimes portraying characteristics more commonly associated with dogs than horses.

Stinky Pete

Woody and Stinky Pete became friends when they first met but when stinky Pete didn't get hid own way as woody not going to Japan he tried to torture him & been enemies ever since.

  • When Jessie first meets Woody in Toy Story 2, she exclaims, "Sweet mother of Abraham Lincoln!" Abraham Lincoln's mother was Nancy Hanks, a blood relative of Woody's voice actor Tom Hanks, who is a direct descendant of an uncle of Nancy Hanks.
  • Woody is based on John Lasseter's Casper doll, as well as the Howdy Doody puppets from the 1950s.
  • Woody's pull-string voice box has many phrases and presumably can say nine like Jessie and Stinky Pete or maybe even more. Seven of them have been heard, sometimes more than once in the films: "Reach for the sky!", "You're my favorite Deputy!", "Somebody's poisoned the waterhole!", "Yee-Haw! Giddyap Partner. We've got to get this wagon train a-movin'!", "There's a snake in my boot!", "This town ain't big enough for the two of us!" and "I'd like to join your posse, boys, but first I'm gonna sing a little song." The others could possibly be "Yee-Haw!" as heard in a cutscene of the Toy Story 2 video game and "Ride like the wind, Bullseye!" from the Woody's Roundup television show and his signature saying that is shown on his merchandise "Hey! Howdy! Hey!".
  • The phrase: "I'd like to join your posse, boys, but first I'm gonna sing a little song." was used in the first film in a deleted scene of Sid torturing Woody and Buzz, it would later be heard in Toy Story 3.
  • In Toy Story 2, when Woody uses his pull-string to swing from the airplane onto Bullseye, none of his phrases are heard when the string retracts. However in the Toy Story 2 Video game cutscene, the phrase "Yee-haw!" is heard. This is also a reference to the first Toy Story video game where Woody could use his pull-string to swing across hazards using nearby hooks.
  • Woody is the only one of Andy's toys to "come alive" while in the presence of a human.
  • Woody has 229 animation points of movement in his face.
  • Woody and Buzz were originally going to be in Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix, but were later scrapped. They did, however, appeared in Kingdom Hearts III.
  • Woody appeared at the 2016 Oscars with Buzz and the Aliens, where they announced that Inside Out won the Best Animated Feature Film award.
  • Tom Hanks jokes that Woody's catchphrase is "Come on guys!"
  • When Woody gets lost with Buzz at the gas station in Toy Story, he gasps and laments over how he is a "lost toy". Ironically, he voluntarily becomes a "lost toy" himself at the end of Toy Story 4.
  • Woody notably uses an iconic scream in three of the four Toy Story films. Toy Story 2 is the only film that does not use this scream.
    • In the first Toy Story film, he uses it twice:
      • When Buzz scares him upon first meeting him
      • When Babyface takes Buzz's arm away from him.
    • It is recycled three times in Toy Story 3:
      • In Andy's imagination prologue when One-Eyed Betty (Mrs. Potato Head) knocks him off the train.
      • When he is dropped from a very tall height from a hang glider.
      • When the Monkey scares him while he and Slinky are trying to sabotage him.
    • It is recycled once again in Toy Story 4 when he rips Bo Peep's arm off by accident.
    • His line ''Bah'' after he shouts to Buzz, became a internet meme.

Woody: "I'm sorry, Bo. It's just that I've been looking forward to this all year. It's my one time with just me and Andy."
