The Moonfish are a school of fish, and some of the minor characters in Finding Nemo.

Finding Nemo[]

"A slick, organized unit, this silvery shoal work together to perform amazing impressions. They specialize in sea creatures, like swordfish or octopuses, but can be persuaded to show off more sophisticated routines, like a cannon-firing sailing ship, or the Sydney Opera House. They cheer up Dory when Marlin upsets her, and tease him by improvising a brilliant take on the clownfish's grumpy personality."[1]

After an argument between Marlin and Dory, the Moonfish unexpectedly appear. In an effort to entertain Dory, they begin doing various "impressions," which consist of them moving into different positions to form various shapes including a swordfish, a lobster, and a sailing ship. They try to get Dory to identify the subject of each of their impressions, and are constantly annoyed when Marlin gives her the answers.

Once Dory explains to them that Marlin lost his son Nemo, the Moonfish decide to help by providing directions. They begin doing impressions to illustrate the route to Sydney, where Nemo has been taken. Before they leave, they warn the duo to go through an upcoming trench and not over it, although Marlin ignores this warning.

One of the members is known as Ted; he has relatives in Sydney.

Finding Nemo: The Video Game[]

In the video game adaptation, Moonfish appear on the level selection screen, forming an icon for that level. They also make a brief appearance in the level Catch Dory, forming an arrow in the background.

They appear most prominently in the Bonus Levels for Mount Wannahockaloogie, East Australian Current and Whale Chase, where they host the Simon Says minigame. The Moonfish will form the shapes of the characters surrounding them in a certain order, and Nemo or Marlin must repeat the pattern back to them to clear each round. Completing every round will award the player a Starfish.

Trivia[]

  • When the Moonfish do their "impression" of a sailing ship, they sing the chorus to A Whale of a Tale, a song performed by Ned Land in Disney's 1954 classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
  • The Moonfish also appear in the teaser trailer for Finding Nemo, forming the basic shape of a fish and an arrow.
  • The Piston Cup Precision Drill Team from Cars are described as Nemomatic MenV's. Because the drill team cars often work together to form letters and words, the carmaker is probably a reference to the moonfish from Finding Nemo.
  • The Moonfish appear to know about the swarm of jellyfish, which is why they warned Marlin and Dory to not go over the trench.
