Marlin: "What if they don't like me?"
Coral: "Marlin..."
Marlin: "No, really."
Coral "There's over 400 eggs. Odds are, one of them is bound to like you."
Marlin and Coral talking about their eggs

Coral was a supporting character in Finding Nemo. She was Marlin's wife and Nemo's biological mother. Like her husband, she was a clownfish. She was Marlin's first sweetheart.

Coral knew Marlin when he was a young fish who really enjoyed clowning around. One day, Coral revealed that she would love a home with an ocean view, so the devoted Marlin managed to get her a much-prized anemone at the drop-off—with a view of the whole ocean. She along with most of her eggs were apparently eaten by the Barracuda.

Finding Nemo[]

"With a new home on the reef, a sea view, and several hundred babies on the way, Coral seemed to have a sweet life in store for her. That is until the dark day when a big barracuda stopped by outta nowhere. In a terrible attack, Coral's dreams turned into a nightmare."[2]

She was shown in the beginning of the movie where she and Marlin are watching over their 400 baby eggs. They were excited to be first-time parents and discussed the eggs' names. Coral says she likes the name Nemo and Marlin says only one can be Nemo, but he wants the rest to be Marlin Jr.

They later play with each other for a while until Coral is distracted by a barracuda. Marlin tells her to get back into the house. However, she was too worried and wouldn't take any chances as Coral swims to protect the eggs and the barracuda lunges at her. As Marlin rushes in to stop her from getting their children to safety, the barracuda smacks him with his tail, knocking him into unconsciousness.

When Marlin wakes up, he discovered that Coral and the eggs are gone after the attack. Marlin then found a single remaining egg which he named Nemo, and promises never to let anything happen to him.

Trivia[]

  • In the visual commentary for Finding Nemo, there are a few deleted scenes about Coral, including one of Nemo asking Marlin what happened to her.
  • In the original storyboard of the film, it was shot so that the audience could glimpse Coral in the barracuda's mouth, but was later cut, possibly because it could have terrified younger audience viewers watching the movie.[citation needed]
  • It is unknown if Marlin ever told Nemo about what happened to his mother and siblings.
