problem with disambig pages[]

OK, I see a couple of problems with disambig pages.

  1. It hides other pages from the search function. For instance, what if I'm looking for Billy Crystal? If I type "Billy" into the search box I'm taken to this disambig page. I don't see the Billy Crystal page. I may not think there is such a page. Either I need to do an advanced search or try different criteria like Crystal.
  2. Disambig pages create a maintenance nightmare. Now whenever I add a new page I should search to see if there's an existing disambig page that matches (like the first name). If I forget we end up with the situation above.

I think the solution is to use disambig sparingly, and where there is a real and complete overlap of names. We now have disambig pages for a number of minor characters. I think we should keep them for the major characters. Even Billy, I don't think we need it (even though there are 2 major pages with that name - Billy (Tin Toy) and Billy Crystal) since their names are already unique. A good example of a page needing disambig could be Sarge, but we've made their names unique so it's not even necessary for them.

Any feedback on this? If I don't hear any major complaints I will rollback some of the disambig pages recently created. --Jeff (talk) 00:02, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
