Cars is a video game that was released in June 2006. It was the first Pixar video game based upon the movie. The game takes place after the movie, as players take the role as Lightning McQueen, as he prepares for the next Piston Cup season, as well as racing new competitors. An Xbox 360 version was released on October 23, 2006 in North America, November 17, 2006 in Europe, and November 23, 2006 in Australia. Also, the Wii version was released as a launch title for the system on November 15, 2006. Versions for PlayStation 3 and mobile were cancelled and never released.[citation needed]

Story[]

Lightning McQueen is dreaming of a street race in Radiator Springs while sleeping in the Cozy Cone Motel, when he is woken by Sally Carrera, who informs him that Doc Hudson is waiting for him at Willy's Butte, while a group of visitors have arrived in Radiator Springs, who are interested in racing McQueen. Additionally, Mack lectures McQueen about getting practice for the upcoming Piston Cup season.

Trivia[]

  • According to Dan Scanlon and Steve Purcell, a lot of the new characters introduced in the game were taken from ideas Pixar had for the movie but never got passed.[12]
  • The Piston Cup racers in this game are different from the ones in the film, despite being nearly identical in appearance. One notable difference is their racing numbers. On the Xbox 360 version, all but 5 of the racers, Rusty Cornfuel, Aiken Axler, James Cleanair, Johnny Blamer, and Claude Scruggs, have the same numbers as the respective racers carrying the same sponsor.
  • The handheld versions are different from the console version:
    • The DS version offers a variety of mini-games to play, as well as a few Piston Cup races.
    • The PSP version has its own story in which Lightning challenges the Delinquent Road Hazards to a series of races in which they would have to leave Radiator Springs if they lose.
    • The GBA version has four playable characters, movie screenshots, and some music from the DS version.
  • Clouds in the shape of tire treads appear in the sky.
  • Naming your profile CHMPION will make the game harder
  • The Xbox 360 version does not have music playing in the cut-scenes while other versions do.
  • New models were created for the Xbox 360 and Wii versions of the game.
  • The last stripes at each end of the repaved road are shaped like lightning bolts.
  • This game is dedicated to Joe Ranft, like the film.
  • Several lines of dialogue in the game are the same as some lines from the film, albeit not the same exact voice clips:
    • Sometimes, when Lightning overtakes another racer or wins a race, he says, "I love being me.", which he says in the film when Mia and Tia flash their headlights at him.
    • Lightning sometimes says, "This is not good for my image." when he loses a race, which he also says in the film before entering the Rust-eze tent at Motor Speedway.
    • Doc might say, "You sure ain't no dirt boy." when he overtakes another racer and during the credits of the film when he and Lightning are racing at Willy's Butte.
  • Doc sometimes says, "You might want to take notes on this one.", when overtaking another car in a race. The same voice clip would be reused in Cars 3 in the flashback where he is balancing a stack of objects on his hood.
